Is one or another cat the pet for you? We’ve got a few ideas on how you might choose your new pet.
Cats have amused and delighted people for thousands of years. Since ancient times, they have been one of man’s preferred pets. Their antics and various personalities are universally charming. Today, there are many cat breeds from which to choose. When selecting a pet cat, be sure to ask these overarching questions to find the feline for your family.
Cat or Kitten?
Adult cats differ from kittens in their daily needs. It is true that kittens won’t always be kittens, but one should be ready to take on the extra responsibility at the outset. They may require litter box training, socialization, and veterinary care, and have more frequent feeding times. Study what exactly you should expect, and consider if you are ready to take on the responsibility.
What Type of Cat?
There are multiple questions to ask regarding the type of cat you might want. Do you have a fur color or length preference in mind? Do you want a specific breed, or would a mixed breed do? Are you looking to rescue a special needs cat? Will the cat come from a breeder, shelter, or rescue group? These questions will answer things about its basic origin, appearance, care needs, and personality based on breed.
What Is Its History?
It is worth digging deeper into your potential new pet’s history, namely its medical and personal history. What are its medical records? Did it undergo its recommended vaccination as a kitten? Did it have past sickness, and does it currently need any special medical care?
If it is a kitten, is it possible to meet its parents? The parents could give you clues on what it might grow up to be. If it is grown, what is its background?
Can It Adapt to Your Household?
Cats typically adjust well to different situations, but it can be helpful to know how well it might adjust to your household, especially if you have children and/or other pets. For example, will the cat cope well with children and dogs?
What Does a Healthy Cat Look Like?
It is best to look for a cat in good health, both physically and socially. You want to look for a cat that has clear eyes, a healthy coat, and a healthy weight. It should not hiss, bite, or scratch when you try to approach it.
What Is Its Personality?
Cats come with all kinds of personalities. Some are more vocal than others, and some are more shy than others. Some are curious, adventurous, laidback, friendly, or cuddly. Any of them can be wonderful pets.
