How to Choose a Cat

Are you looking to adopt a pet cat? Consider these tips to choose the one for you.

Choosing a pet cat can be difficult. There are so many out there! You can get your new pet at a shelter, a rescue center, or a reputable breeder. When searching through these avenues, it helps to know what to check for to make a great choice. All cats deserve a great home, but some pets might suit yours better than others. Here are a few tips on how to choose a cat.

Consider Its Age

One factor to consider is its age. Do you want a kitten or an adult cat? A kitten can be more work, requiring more vaccinations if they are only 2-3 months and training. A kitten can also have a lot more energy and need more attention, depending on its temperament. An adult cat, especially a stray, can be more independent, be set in its ways, and possibly have issues with other pets.

Consider Its Grooming Needs

Long-haired cats will need more rigorous grooming than short-haired cats. Don’t think that hairless cats need even less maintenance; they will have specialized grooming needs of their own. Be prepared for your particular cat’s grooming needs to prevent mats, dry skin, and other problems.

Check Its Health

Shelters, breeders, and rescuers are responsible for the health of their animals. In fact, they will generally care for the animal’s ailments before releasing it for adoption. Ask the appropriate authority for information about the health of a cat you are interested in adopting before making a final decision. If the cat needs ongoing medical care, decide if you are willing and able to take it on.

Check Its Temperament or Behavior

How does the cat behave? Is it an easy-going, laidback cat or a high-energy cat with a huge personality? Is it confident and social, or does it need someone to help it overcome fear or aggression? Generally, you want to choose a cat that is easy to get along with, but particular people will have a heart to help an aggressive or fearful cat.

How Well Do You Connect with the Cat?

Perhaps you are looking for a cat that you can have a special connection with. What cat will stand out to you? It could be the only cat that has a particular personality, the only one that is friendly to you, or, conversely, the only one that ignores you. It’s an individual choice!
