How Often Should You Walk Your Dog?

Is there a standard amount of steps your dog should get in? It depends!

Walking a dog is great enrichment for both you and your pet. It’s a time to take in the fresh air and sunshine, get away from your phone, and get some physical exercise. Walking your dog should be a positive experience, a time to bond, have fun, and get in your steps. How often should you walk your dog? You can look at the answer based on its age.

How Often Should You Walk a Puppy?

Puppies go through a vaccination schedule against various fatal canine viruses for the first 16 weeks of their life, which is less than four months. You should wait until at least two weeks after its last vaccination before taking it for a walk.

Also, consider identifying your pet with a microchip, collar, or both in case it gets loose. Your puppy should also be ready to walk on a leash, which you can help it do in your home or backyard.

Puppies will not be as strong as most adult dogs, so it’s a good idea to take shorter walks. Be mindful of the weather, since puppies cannot regulate their temperature as well as adult dogs can. Consider investing in a coat for cold weather and walking in the cool of the day during hot summers.

How Often Should You Walk an Adult Dog?

Adult dogs also vary in their ability to go on long and fast walks based on their breed, size, and health. Be mindful of your dog’s endurance and adjust accordingly. If you sense an unusual level of fatigue in your dog or any other unusual physical conditions, call your local vet.

All in all, a 10-20 minute walk should be sufficient for most dogs. Some dogs have high energy levels and will want to go long and fast, and others will slowly amble and be done after a short while.

How Often Should You Walk a Senior Dog?

Senior dogs will likely have lower endurance than adult dogs. Some may also suffer from arthritis but do well at a slower pace. Even if your pet cannot walk for very long, it might still enjoy coming for a ride in a dog-friendly cart if you go on walks as a family.
