How Your Dog is Trying to Tell You that They Need More Exercise

If your dog is behaving in any of the following ways, these behaviors may indicate their need for more exercise.

Our pets communicate with us in many ways. With this, dogs, in particular, have a distinct way of communicating messages that may indicate a need. While some messages are more obvious, such as a need for food or going outside, their need for exercise may be communicated in a more subtle way that requires you to take notice for different reasons. If your dog is behaving in any of the following ways, these behaviors may indicate their need for more exercise.

Slow or Sluggish Demeanor at Home

If your dog appears to be moving a little slower than usual, or if they seem less responsive to stimuli such as treats, meals, or guests in the house, they may need more exercise. Similar to the effects of exercise on our demeanor and emotional needs, slow or sluggish behaviors in dogs may be a sign that your dog needs to get outside more.

Abnormal Destructive Behavior

While chewing on a toy is a benign act of playfulness, tearing up a room or a dog bed may indicate that your dog is trying to express a need for activity. Abnormal destructive behaviors such as tearing apart furniture, walls, or objects that are not toys are often signs that your dog may need to exercise more during the week.

Aggressive Behavior During Playtime

If your otherwise friendly dog seems a bit more aggressive during playtime, it may be a sign that they need to exercise more during the day. This aggressive behavior may be stemming from built-up energy that they are unable to release inside at home. Exercising outside, whether it is walking around the neighborhood or running around the yard, allows them to enjoy spending their energy on an activity that not only allows them to have fun but to stay in shape as well.

Excessive Barking

Does your dog seem a little louder than usual? If your dog is barking more than average, this may also be a sign that they need to exercise more. Similar to the signs of aggressive behavior during playtime and destructive behavior at home, excessive barking may also be an indicator of tension caused by inactivity.
