Measuring Right
The first step is to know what collar size your dog needs. A soft measuring tape will do nicely. Measure the circumference of your dog’s neck, below the ears but above the collarbone, and add two inches to that measurement. The extra inches allow your dog to breathe but not slip out of the collar. If you have a puppy, fit to size but remember to update the collar as the puppy grows.
Dog Collar Type
Standard
Dog collars come in many varieties, the most common being the standard nylon collar. This collar is typical for well-trained dogs and is highly affordable. However, they will wear out more quickly. Faux leather collars are also available, but genuine leather will last the longest.
Training
If you’re looking for a training collar, a martingale is one of the safest options. This collar usually contains a metal chain within a nylon slip, tightening when the dog pulls on the leash. This type of dog collar is the best way to apply pressure without risking injury.
Outdoors
If you and your pet spend much time outdoors, waterproof and LED collars will prove durable and safe. Neoprene and biothane are two common materials for extra-durable collars. Keep in mind that these types may be bulkier than the average collar.
Buckles
Dog collar buckles are either plastic or metal. If you are not the adventurous, wilderness-exploring sort, a plastic buckle will be adequate, not to mention easier to use. If your dog likes to chew things and goes on frequent outdoor excursions, however, a metal buckle will be more durable.
Harnesses
Dog collars are by far the most reliable for walks and provide all that’s needed for control. Harnesses are an option, but these are specifically for pets who need a firmer hand for training. There are many styles designed for varying situations, including no-pull, car, and standard.
